The Open Doors General Practice Nurse (GPN) Training Programme supports the recruitment and development of new General Practice Nurses. This is either a two-year or 12 month fixed contract, dependent on which programme the nurse chooses to study. We expect GP employers to commit to nurses being part of the practices long term plans. In addition to local tutorship support, NHS England also provide salary backfill support at a pro rata £20,000 per nurse (based on 1 year programme).
The GPN Training Programme within Tower Hamlets is well established and has shaped many skilled practice nurses. Many of these nurses are still working within your practices and have completed this training with ‘Open Doors (OD)’ clinical tutor support, which we are extremely lucky to have as a resource within the borough.
Advertising for nurses keen to transition into Primary Care will begin in August. The GP Care Group will support with recruitment with HR and occupational health checks.
The Open Doors nursing team are a group of very experienced practice nurses, nurse practitioners and nurse mentors/educators who are here to support you and your staff. They offer weekly one-to-one support for your new GPN staff member; come into practice to work alongside them as they build up their clinical skills and overall confidence. Alongside this they offer action learning groups with the nurses in their cohort. The nurses attend City University of London where they study for academic qualifications in practice nursing.
How will this benefit your staff and practice?
