Our Advocacy and Interpreting Service has been praised for improving access for the deaf community by Tower Hamlets Mayor, Lutfur Rahman.
We appointed Sign Live last year to provide an on-demand British Sign Language (BSL) service for residents who use our services. It has enabled people who are deaf to call their GP practice through their smart phones and access healthcare services. Previously, they would have needed an interpreter to access primary care, which could take up to three days – but now can do this instantly for themselves.
Lawrence Muyimba, Head of Advocacy and Interpreting, attended the Mayor’s Disability Roadshow last Friday, where he met Mayor Rahman (see picture).
Lawrence said: “It was great to be acknowledged by the Mayor for the work we are doing in opening up access to primary care services to the deaf community. This has not only made life easier for them, it is also helping to reduce costs. We are proud to offer this service which is making such a difference to our deaf community in Tower Hamlets.”
