The Child Accident Prevention Trust has put together a pack with a range of child safety advice, including safety from burns, choking, dogs, batteries and poisonous products, which parents should read, or healthcare professionals can share with parents.
The pack has tips on road safety, and safety around water and fire. It also provides fun activities which parents can do with their children, such as a word search and a quiz.
Advice for parents on how to keep children safe from batteries
Small batteries are dangerous to young children. If swallowed, they can cause severe internal burns within hours. They may lead to choking, infection, or long-term injury. Batteries placed in the nose or ears can damage tissues and cause infections.
Prevention tips:
Emergency steps if a child swallows a battery
1. Seek immediate medical help by going to Accident and Emergency or calling 999.
2. Do not let the child eat, drink, or vomit.
The warning signs that your child may have swallowed a battery are: pain, drooling, vomiting, or difficulty swallowing.
