GP Care Group Practice Nurses take part in NEL GPN Leadership Programme

Posted on: 27 March 2019

An exciting new programme to deliver the General Practice Nurse 10 Point Plan kicked off in January this year and two GP Care Group Practice Nurses are taking part in the programme.

Kelly Fletcher from Tredegar and Siu Ling Wong are involved in the North East London General Practice Nurse Leadership Programme, which is aimed at helping to ensure the future primary care nursing workforce is ready and able to take on the challenges set out in the NHS Long Term Plan.

The newly appointed Chief Nursing Officer for England, Ruth May took time out of her busy schedule to visit the NEL GPN 'Leaders of the future' on the opening day of the programme, 23 January 2019. Jane Clegg, the Director of Nursing and Regional Deputy Chief Nurse, also attended.

All of the 10 points are dependent on good management structures locally with dedicated staff to provide development of the GPN role, e.g. supporting mentorship, engaging with Return to Practice Nursing, providing placements for pre- registration nurses etc. Therefore, GPN leaders need to be developed who will take the Practice Nursing agenda forward and ensure the primary care nursing workforce is ready and able to take on the challenges set out in the NHS Long Term Plan.

As the healthcare system looks to more multi-professional teams in General Practice, nurses will need the confidence to use their skills and experience in new and effective ways. Their enormous contribution to patient health outcomes can be overlooked in times of great change when new roles are being championed as the answer to GP shortages.

The GPN Leadership Programme is a bespoke programme that has been developed and coordinated by the City and Hackney GP Confederation. The Programme is delivered one day per month and will run for a nine month duration. The exposure to the 'Whole System' and the 'in-situ experiential learning' are what set this course apart from more traditional leadership training programmes.
