In a significant step toward improving access to sexual health services, the Care Group launched a new self-referral pathway for Long-Acting Reversible Contraception (LARC) in April. This initiative allows patients registered in Tower Hamlets to refer themselves directly to the LARC Hub service without needing to see a healthcare professional first. Patients who complete the self-referral form are booked in for a LARC counselling appointment with one of the service’s specialist nurses before a face-to-face appointment is offered.
The service has since received more self-referrals than the total number of referrals in the previous quarter, reflecting strong early engagement. This growth highlights the effectiveness of the new model in meeting patient needs more efficiently.
Patient feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Of the individuals who accessed the LARC service since April, 91% of respondents to our feedback survey reported they were ‘very satisfied’ with the service.
When asked about their preferred location for LARC fitting, 66% chose our LARC Hub Service, while the remainder preferred their own GP practice.
Maju Miah, Head of Primary Care Services, said: “I would like to thank our dedicated LARC nurses and administrator, whose hard work and commitment have been instrumental in the successful rollout and delivery of this service. Their efforts continue to make a meaningful difference in the lives of patients across Tower Hamlets.”
