How the Care Group has been vaccinating 12-15-year-olds with high-risk medical needs

Posted on: 1 October 2021

Children aged 12-15 who have higher risk medical needs received the green light to have their COVID-19 vaccine a few weeks ago and the GP Care Group is proud to have been supporting this programme in the borough.

The young people at the centre of this work are those with complex medical needs, including those with:

  • Severe neuro disability
  • Immunosuppression (and/or within the household)
  • Profound and Multiple severe Learning disabilities
  • Young people with Down’s Syndrome.

We have seen good uptake of the offer of the vaccine from young people in this cohort. Nursery Nurses from the GP Care Group, Zubeda Khyum, Shahana Parvin, and Terri Caya, initially contacted known parents of this cohort offering them vaccination appointments for sessions available between 18 and 25 September.

Tower Hamlets Public Health team coordinated an engagement process, offering webinars for parents and clinical support for parents to answer queries prior to their appointments. And finally, the young people received their vaccines from a lovely team of experienced vaccinators at the vaccine clinic in Cable Street.

In all, 23 young people with high-risk needs were vaccinated over the two-week period. A great result and brilliant teamwork by all involved.
