Just Say Hello – having conversations to reduce loneliness

The theme for this year’s Loneliness Awareness Week, 9-15 June, is ‘Meeting Loneliness Together’ and is all about reducing the stigma around this natural human emotion.

The theme for this year’s Loneliness Awareness Week, 9 -15 June , is ‘Meeting Loneliness Together’. The theme is all about reducing the stigma this normal human emotion and encouraging collective efforts to foster connections.  

Just Say Hello is a Tower Hamlets campaign about encouraging conversations and connecting with one other. The campaign offers these suggestions for starting to build those connections.

  • Just Say Hello! Even a simple greeting can make someone feel seen and valued.
  • Make a phone call to someone you haven't spoken to in a while - stay connected.
  • Invite a friendly neighbour over for tea or coffee - build a friendship.
  • Check in on elderly relatives and friends - ensure their needs are met and they are not feeling lonely.
  • Be inclusive and welcoming - get to know people from all walks of life.

Feeling lonely is completely normal. If you are feeling lonely, or know someone else who is, there are plenty of simple, affordable actions you can take, such as: 

As part of the Just Say Hello campaign, Tower Hamlets Council for Voluntary Services and partners have put together a directory of community groups and activities you can join to build connection with fellow residents.
