SignLive; new service creates equal access to services for Deaf residents

Deaf residents to get faster access to qualified online British Sign Language (BSL) interpreters.

Posted on: 29 August 2024

SignLive, a new on-demand and responsive British Sign Language Interpreting service is now available for the Deaf community in Tower Hamlets to help them access GP services and other community health services via smartphone or computer.

The official launch of the new 24-hour SignLive service, organised by DeafPlus, took place last month at Tower Hamlets Town Hall. Representatives from local health and care organisations attended the launch event.

The service was commissioned after Tower Hamlets Public Health funded disability audits and training, delivered by local accessibility groups, including Real and DeafPLUS in the borough. These audits highlighted the problems faced by Deaf residents trying to access health services due to shortages of interpreters available for appointments.

Through SignLive, an estimated 600 people will have improved access to GP services from the comfort and convenience of their smart phone or computer.

GP Care Group Chief Executive Officer, Zainab Arian, welcomed the new resource. She said: “SignLive is more responsive to Deaf patients as it can be used for all appointment types, including scheduled and walk-in services. It is also suitable for those calling for urgent or emergency care and follow-up appointments.

“We are delighted to be delivering this vital service for our local Deaf BSL population.”

Cllr Abdul Wahid, Cabinet Member for Customer Service, Equalities and Social Inclusion, who spoke at the event, said: “This service is a significant and commendable step towards ensuring equitable healthcare access for all. On-demand BSL interpreting will enhance communication between patients and healthcare providers, ensuring that everyone receives the care they need, when they need it.

“I wholeheartedly support this commitment to inclusivity and the wellbeing of every individual in our diverse community.”

How to use SignLive

SignLive is a free service that will connect you to a qualified online BSL interpreter. The interpreter will relay the conversation between you and a member of your local GP staff. It can also be used for face-to-face conversations on site.

First time users of the service will need to complete a free one-time registration. Once logged in, search through the Community Directory for your GP practice.
