Project SEARCH is a national supported internship programme for young people with learning disabilities and/or autism. In Tower Hamlets, it’s delivered by Phoenix School in partnership with Queen Mary University, running across a full academic year and split into three 12-week workplace rotations.
This year, we were proud to support two interns from the Tower Hamlets branch:
Jamal Hassan (pictured above, end right)
Our first intern, Jamal, was placed directly within the Care Group, completing his third and final rotation with our CEPN team. In seven weeks, Jamal, supported training events, designed flyers, and helped with data entry around training registers. He shadowed and was supported by several members of the team. On his experience, Jamal said: “I really enjoyed being part of the team and learning how things work behind the scenes. Everyone was friendly and made me feel welcome I’ve learned a lot and feel more confident now.”
Zakaria Sulieman, CEPN Team member who supported Jamal in his internship said: “It was an absolute joy having Jamal with us. He brought great energy to the team, and I really enjoyed supporting him and watching him grow over the weeks.”
Sajjad Khan
Sajjad completed his third rotation at Aberfeldy Practice and was awarded Intern of the Year at the graduation event. Wai Bun Lam, Operations Manager at the Aberfeldy Practice said: "Sajjads dedication, growth, and unwavering positivity have made a lasting impact on our team. It's been an exciting journey watching him develop, and we're truly thankful for the energy and excellence he brought every step of the way."
Get involved
We’ve been involved with Project SEARCH since 2023. Our first intern Juned Ali completed his placement at Jubilee Street Practice, later securing a paid role there. He’s still in post and thriving.
These placements have been such a positive experience not just for the interns, but also for the teams who’ve hosted them. The interns bring fresh perspective, enthusiasm, and real contributions, and it’s been amazing to see their confidence and skills grow during their time with us.
Planning is already underway for the 2025-26 Project SEARCH intake. If you work Tower Hamlets Health and Social Care join this opportunity to support inclusion, give back to the community, and have a real impact on a young person’s future.
