The British Medical Association has announced that resident doctors will strike between 7am Friday 25 July and 7am on Wednesday 30 July 2025. Read on for guidance during this time.
Resident doctors, formerly called junior doctors, make up a large proportion of the local medical workforce. They help our hospitals run smoothly by leading on essential parts of your care. During these strikes, other doctors, including consultants and other specialist doctors, will still be working.
The NHS is working hard to ensure adequate staffing through all urgent care pathways, urgent elective cases, and other critical services. However, the disruption to staffing will cause a reduction in elective activity and this may mean some appointments and procedures may need to be rescheduled.
If you have not been contacted, please attend your appointment as planned. The NHS will contact you if your appointment needs to be rescheduled due to strike action.
If you’re caring for vulnerable people, such as the elderly, children and people with long-term conditions, get in touch with your GP if you have concerns about accessing medical care.
Remember there are other healthcare options available instead of calling 999. You can visit your pharmacist or GP, call or visitNHS 111.
Make sure you have ordered and collected any repeat medicines, especially if you are travelling. Your first port of call is your GP practice, which will be able to provide online, phone and video consultations as well as arrange for prescriptions to be sent to any pharmacy you choose.
Patients presenting to urgent care with non-life-threatening concerns may face longer waiting times. Help yourself and others by choosing services appropriately. Our Urgent Treatment Centre at the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel, has contingency plans in place should workforce pressures arise. As always, if your health need is non-urgent you may be signposted to other services. Save yourself time and check our guide to getting the right care.

GP practices will continue to be open as normal. You should continue to attend GP and dental appointments unless you are contacted and told otherwise.
