Social prescribing cycle scheme launched

Our Social Prescribing Service is part of a new cycle scheme to help residents get out and about in the borough.

Posted on: 7 August 2025

Tower Hamlets residents that use our Social Prescribing service can now be offered cheaper Santander Cycle Hire with a 75% discount available, saving them £15 per month. Social Prescribing addresses the social factors impacting your health and wellbeing and you may be referred to our service by a GP or you can refer yourself.

The offer:

  • Santander Cycles monthly membership will cost £5 instead of usual £20.
  • Unlimited 60-minute rides for 30 days.
  • Free day passes may be issued by your social prescriber for those that may want to try before committing.

Sahdia Warraich, Care Group's Social Prescribing Service Manager said: "Our service received more than 10,000 referrals last year and demand continues to increase. Financial problems are a key concern and so discounted offers make a huge difference. We hope this scheme will help people get out and about to explore the borough on their journey towards better health. The combination of nature, community and exercise have a proven record of addressing many of the health issues our residents face, which is why this scheme is such positive news."

This new scheme is thanks to a partnership with Transport for London (TfL) and the Greater London Authority (GLA) and our Social Prescribing service. Partners met at Victoria Park on 30 July, which coincided with the 15-year anniversary of TfL Cycle Hire.

In 15 years, TfL Cycle Hire has supported the NHS with free rides during the COVID19 pandemic and a permanent discount for NHS staff. The offer is now extended to our Social Prescribing service who can now offer cheaper monthly passes to our residents.

You can see in pictures our Social Prescribing team, and senior members of the TfL and GLA, and Bikeworks colleagues who supported the launch of our event, leading our bike ride and helping those less confident in riding with their cycling skills. Bikeworks believe everyone should have access to cycling and really helped our colleagues feel at ease as they pedalled around the park.

It’s great to see other partners understand our vision for health and wellbeing being more than medicine. A huge thanks to all the partners that made the launch day and the scheme possible.
