The school nursing teams works closely with education, social care and other health professionals, to help children and young people to remain healthy and ensure that any health needs are met. This is through ranges of screening programmes, health promotions and regular drop-in sessions at schools. Our team of nurses, community staff nurses, and clinical support workers aim to improve the physical, emotional, and mental health of the children, young people, and families within the community. Please be aware that this service is not commissioned for children attending private schools in Waltham Forest.
The Waltham Forest School Nursing Service is made up of:
School nurses: They are Specialist Community Public Health Nurses (SCPHN), who are highly qualified nurses with additional degree in public health, which explicitly relates to the health needs of the school aged population.
Community staff nurses: They are registered nurses with a variety of experiences from different nursing background working within the school nursing service.
Health Promotion Practitioner: They carry out health promotion sessions at schools coffee mornings, parents evening and in the community drop in settings
Healthy Weight Practitioner: They follow up the outcome of National Child Measurement Programme (NCMP) with parents, complete referral with parental consent, signpost to other professionals and organise healthy eating sessions with parents/schools.
Clinical Support Worker: They have vast experience and specific training in working with children, young people, families and schools. They visit schools and carry out the National Child Measurement Programme (NCMP) for children in reception and year 6, vision and hearing screening for reception year group and Health Needs Assessments (HNA’s). These assessments help to identify the health needs of children and young people and plan an evidence based individualised health interventions.
