What is the Health Visiting service?

The Health Visiting service is here to make sure both mother and baby are doing well. The aim is to make sure all children have the best possible start in life. We are here for mothers, and fathers, as much as your child, to make sure you have positive mental and emotional wellbeing.

At the Care Group, we provide a Health Visiting service in two London boroughs: Tower Hamlets and Waltham Forest.

Who is in your Health Visiting team?

The Health Visiting team is made up of Health Visitors, Staff Nurses, Nursery Nurses, Support Workers and Administrators. Health Visitors are nurses or midwives with specialist training in family and public health.

The Health Visiting service is part of the wider 0-25 service, which supports children and young people through school, until they are a young adult.

Our Health Visiting teams works closely with lots of other organisations and services which support children’s health and wellbeing. These include children and family centres, nurseries, GPs, maternity services, and voluntary organisations.

New birth visit

A check when you are 28 weeks pregnant.

When your baby is born, you will remain in the care of your midwife for the first few days. After that time, you will be passed into the care of the Health Visiting team.

This visit will be offered between 10 and 14 days after birth, at your home. The Health Visitor will check with you and your baby, they will cover topics such as feeding, sleeping, safety, coping with becoming a parent, and welcoming your baby into your family. They will also check in with you about your physical and mental wellbeing.

You will receive an appointment letter and possibly a text message on your phone reminding you of your appointment.

At the visit we will:

  • Complete an assessment to identify and act on any needs you or your baby may have
  • Give health and wellbeing advice
  • Weigh your baby
  • Check your baby.

Your Health Visitor will provide you with advice and their contact details should you wish to get in touch for any reason.

6-8 week check

This check is with the Health Visitor. It is a different check to the one you will have with your GP at a similar time.

The Health Visitor will discuss your wellbeing, how baby is feeding and sleeping, and other topics such as immunisation.

The visit is to review your baby’s growth and talk about how you are feeling.

This is also an opportunity for you to talk to your Health Visitor about any other issues you may have with your baby.

3-4 month check

This appointment usually takes place with a Staff Nurse or a Health Visitor. It is a follow-up to the 6-8 week check to ensure your baby is developing well and to promote healthy choices for you and your baby. This is a stage when parents start to think about introducing your baby to solid foods – although solids should only be introduced after six months. This is because babies are not properly developed for solid foodsuntil this time. We will also give information about groups available locally whichsupports weaning and other aspect of your baby’s healthy growth and development.

8-12 month check

This appointment is usually carried out by a Community Nursery Nurse. They will review your child’s health, wellbeing, development and complete a physical review which includes length, weight, head circumference, hip assessment and testes check for boys.‍

You will be asked to complete an Ages and Stages Questionnaire. Parents are asked to complete this before attending the appointment. The questionnaire is useful as it will help you understand how your child is developing. The appointment will either take place in your home or in a children’s centre near to you.‍

We will give you advice about how to encourage your baby’s development and offer advice to promote the health of you and your baby.

2-2.5 year check

Your little one is now a toddler. They are growing up and discovering the world. This developmental check helps you to ensure that your toddler is starting to become ready for school.

This appointment is likely to take place in a local children’s centre and will be carried out by a Community Nursery Nurse. You will be sent two Ages and Stages Questionnaires to complete in advance of the appointment. These will look at a range of topics, including gross and fine motor skills.

This is currently the final check we carry out as part of the service.  However, if you have any concerns about your child’s development you are always welcome to get in touch with the service up until they are five years old.Should there be any indication that your child may need further review or assessment, a plan will be discussed with you. This may include support you can offer your child in the home, local groups and activities that may benefit your child, timescales for further assessment or what referrals might be considered, either now or in the future.
